Product Review: The Squatty Potty®...Myth or Magic?

*Disclaimer - Expect Results Wellness for Women and Dr. Sarah R. Hnath (author of this blog) does NOT receive any kickbacks from Squatty Potty® or any associated companies or brands. We just really believe in having a good quality pooping experience for both your pelvic health and enjoyment. Happy pooping!

Squatty Potty®: Myth or Magic?

Will using the squatty potty turn you into a unicorn and make you poop ice cream? No, don't be ridiculous. But it will help you poop more efficiently, help combat constipation and decrease any strain you may be putting on your rectum, pelvic floor and other surrounding structures when using the crapper.

The Claim

The creators of the Squatty Potty ® claim that using this toilet stool you can mimic the posture of natural pooping by utilizing a squatted position.

The Science

Their claims are in fact scientifically sound! We were meant to squat to poop. Most toilets put our body at a 90 degree angle (or even higher!) but realistically we are not going outside in our yards to drop a load. Utilizing tools like the squatty potty® (or any kind of foot stool) we can prop our feet up to create a squatted position without having to leave our porcelain thrones.

When we are in the squatted position our anorectal angle (the angle between the anus and the rectum) increases, making it straighter and more obtuse. This position relaxes the pelvic floor muscles and helps ease fecal evacuation AKA your poop will come out much more easily and you won't be putting added stress on the muscles and connective tissue that support your organs.

This can decrease many unnecessary health issues including but not limited to:

  • hemmorhoids

  • constipation

  • pelvic organ prolapse

  • pelvic pain

  • valsalva maneuver

  • and much more!

Creating a Porcelain Throne Worthy of a Queen

In addition to the squatty potty® ($29 and up) some of our favorite products that we like to keep stocked in our bathrooms and highly recommend are poopouri® ($9.95 and up) to swap the stench of poop with an array of lovely botanical scents, cleansing wipes by goodwipes® ($7) to cleanse down there and balance the pH of your lady bits after taking a poo. Both these products are great for at home or on the go!

It's important to note that Squatty Potty ® nor any of these products are NOT a cure for constipation or any of the aforementioned health complications, it is simply a tool to help address the mechanical and postural contribution to these issues and to help provide a more comfortable pooping experience. If you are suffering from any of these issues please consult with a GI specialist, nutritionist and a physical therapist that specializes in constipation and issues of the pelvic floor like the specialist at Expect Results Wellness for Women.
